RTVMF

RTVMF:

Recently, the authors developed a proof-of-concept implementation of RTVMF and deployed it on real vehicles, successfully integrating all of the technology. The goal was to explore how this new type of vehicle might operate in real-world environments.

RTVMF is is a new type of vehicle, which operates with an onboard computing system. All vehicles are equipped with sensors to determine their position and orientation in their environment (using GPS).

They also have the ability to communicate wirelessly via cellular networks or other types of wireless communications technology. A central computer receives data from all vehicles within range and calculates the optimal path for each individual vehicle based on real-time information about traffic flow, road conditions, etc.

This allows it to pick the best route using available roads that minimize travel time for every driver without any need for drivers’ input or control over the steering wheel or pedals at all.

RtVMF has successfully integrated most technologies currently used by connected and autonomous vehicles.

The implementation of RTVMF was done using commercially available hardware and software components. Vehicle sensors are integrated into the vehicle’s control unit, which also has a CAN interface for communication with other modules in the car.

The GPS receiver is located on top of the dashboard behind the windshield to improve signal reception. The cellular modem allows sending information about the current position to a central computer over a cellular network (LTE).

Central computer receives data from all cars within range by two-way communications via wireless access point installed at each intersection or road section where traffic lights are present.

It runs its own embedded Linux operating system running Ubuntu 16 LTS distribution made specifically for robotics applications including ROS Kinetic Kame support out-of-the-box.
